Customs controls

Between France and Italy, Thello is crossing Switzerland

There are two custom controls during their journey :

  • between France and Switzerland
  • between Switzerland and Italy

Why customs controls?

As Switzerland is not a member of the European Union and does not belong to the European Customs Union either, the Border Guard continues to carry out customs controls.

Travellers should thus be able to prove their identity by means of a valid identity document at the entry and their departure of Switzerland.

Documents to provide

The documents to be provided for customs control may differ depending on whether you are a national of an EU member state or not. Each passenger has to ensure that he or her is in the possession of the relevant travel documents.

You are a national of an EU member state

You need valid ID documents for border crossing:

     –  a national identity card (valid)
     –  a national passport (valid)

No visa is required to stay in Switzerland.

Warning: it is up to you to ensure that you are in possession of such a valid ID before boarding the Thello trains.

You are not a national of an EU member stateYou are a national of an EU member state

you hold a residence permit in France: all foreign nationals, regardless of nationality, with a residence permit valid for 10 years or a temporary residence permit valid for one year is exempt from visa for entry into the Swiss territory. The residence permit and the passport must be presented at the Swiss border.

Otherwise, a visa may be required.

From a practical point of view, a French minor may cross borders:

  • equipped with its single valid passport (Children cannot any longer be in the passports of their parents, they need to have their own passport) or

  • with its valid national identity card for travel throughout the European Union as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Andorra, San Martin and the Vatican.

  • An authorization to leave the territory (AST)

As of January 15, 2017, a minor child who lives in France and travels abroad alone or without being accompanied by a parent shall be provided with an authorization to leave the territory (AST). This is a form established and signed by a parent (or legal guardian). The form must be accompanied by a photocopy of an identity document from the signing parent. For more information
